The RDF/LT (Rapid Deployment Force/Light Tank) assault gun is a pint-sized vehicle designed to give the US Army’s Rapid Deployment Force an easily transportable combat vehicle that adds a valuable punch to the light forces that it is intended to support.

The Israelis recieved both Willys MD M38A1 and Ford M151 light utility vehicles, many of which were used for scouting and other reconnaissance duties. These Sayeret (special forces) scouts pushed aggressive patrols ahead of the armoured advances, locating enemy postions, and redirecting the advance around them.

Following the 1973 war the reserve elements of the air defence battalions were equipped with the FIM-43 man-portable air defence missile system. This light weapon could be easily fired by a single operator and used an infra-red seeker to chase the hot exhaust of attacking aircraft.

A rifle platoon is organised into three rifle squads and a platoon headquarters. Each rifle squad has a squad leader and is divided into three four-man fire teams, one with a M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW), a team leader with a M16 and a M203 grenade launcher, and two men with M16 assault rifles. The platoon headquarters consists of a platoon leader and three men all with M16 assault rifles.

Though the Marine rifle company has little transport of its own they can be provided with transport from the division’s assault amphibian battalion AAVP7 assault amphibious vehicles or by the helicopters of the Marine aircraft group supporting their division. However, they are equally adept at moving and fighting on foot.

The Roland 2 Flugabwehrraketenpanzer (abbreviated to FlaRakPanzer, or Anti-aircraft Rocket Tank) is a sophisticated mobile short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system. The Roland anti-aircraft missile was a joint development between the French and Germans.

The Roland 2 is the all-weather German variant mounted on the hull of the Marder infantry fighting vehicle. The paired missile launchers can automatically reload in less than 30 seconds from four-round rotary magazines mounted in the hull sides. The Roland 2 is designed to engage aircraft flying at speeds up to Mach 1.3 at altitudes up to 5,500 meters (18,000 feet). It has a maximum range of 6,300 meters (20,500 feet).

The SA-8 Gecko is a highly effective mobile air-defence missile system that incorporates both its engagement radars and missile launchers in one vehicle. This allows it to detect, track, and engage aircraft independently.

Its SA-8 surface-to-air missiles are further enhanced by a radar guidance system that can guide two missiles simultaneously. It also has a back-up electro-optical guidance system that can be used if the radar is jammed by ECM (Electronic Counter Measures).

The British Army Of the Rhine had three tracked reconnaissance regiments. The recce troops of the first two were equipped entirely with Scimitar reconnaissance vehicles, while the recce troops of the third mixed Scimitars and Scorpions together.

The Scorpion
As divisional troops, the medium recce squadron’s main role is to be a trip line to detect Soviet thrusts and identify the main effort ahead of the divisions main line of resistance, while denying Soviet reconnaissance troops the opportunity to identify where the British defences lie. A secondary role is to act as a mobile force to eliminate light Soviet forces airlanded behind the front line.

The Scimitar (x4)
The main difference between the Scorpion and the Scimitar is their main armament. The Scimitar mounts a 30mm L21 Rarden automatic gun with a high rate of fire, while the Scorpion mounts a 76mm L23 gun with a slower rate of fire, but a deadly HESH (High Explosive Squash Head) round that demolishes light armoured vehicles, buildings, and infantry bunkers with equal ease.

Being small and light, the Scorpion and Scimitar are exceedingly quick. However, that small size is achieved at the cost of having the commander load the main gun making it difficult to coordinate fire and movement.

First used in the 1973 war, the A-4 Skyhawk continued into service in the 1980s with the reservists of 147 Squadron. This high performance ground-attack aircraft carried a variety of weapons loads, including cluster bombs and napalm. Israeli Skyhawks replaced the Colt Mk.12 20mm cannons of the US version with French DEFA 30mm cannons.

The FV103 Spartan armoured personnel carriers based on the same Scorpion chassis as the rest of the squadron. These give them the speed and protection to get into position ahead of the enemy in time to prepare a hot reception.

The Spartan’s light aluminium armour actually provides better protection for its passengers than the heavier, though thinner, steel armour of the infantry’s standard FV432 APC.

Striker
The FV102 Striker provides the armoured reconnaissance regiment with long-range heavy anti-tank capability. Mounting five Swingfire missiles on the Spartan chassis, the Striker punches far above its weight.

Like the armoured regiment’s FV438 Swingfire,the gunner of the Striker can dismount and move away from his hidden vehicle to fire. Combined with a very low profile, this makes the Striker hard to counter. Often avoiding its field of fire is the safest solution, but with such a long range, that isn’t easy to do.

Spartan (Blowpipe)
The Blowpipe man-portable anti-aircraft missile is somewhat unique in that it is not self-homing. The operator pilots the missile until it intercepts the target. This requires a lot of skill to do successfully but does make it immune to countermeasures like jamming, chaff, and flares.

This method of operation has another benefit too. With a bit of cleverness, the operator can also engage ground targets with the missile, as demonstrated when they were used against bunkers in the Falklands War.

Spartan MCT
As well as FV432-mounted Milan sections, the battalion anti-tank platoon has a mobile Milan section mounted in modified Spartan armoured personnel carriers. The mobile Milan section gives the infantry a useful anti-tank reserve with the speed to get where it is needed to bolster the unit’s anti-tank defences.

The Spartan MCT (Milan Compact Turret) is based on Spartan, an armoured personnel carrier based on the light Scorpion reconnaissance tank chassis, mounting a small turret with a Milan missile launcher on each side.

An armoured anti-aircraft artillery platoon, as well as being equipped with PRTL anti-aircraft tanks, also has three FIM-92 Stinger man-portable air defence systems, each with six missiles, for additional anti-aircraft cover.

These men, along with the replacement group with three extra PRTL crews, enables the anti-aircraft platoon to maintain operational readiness around the clock through crew rotations. Crews currently not manning the PRTL anti-aircraft tanks are trained to use the Stinger systems for additional air defence.

The Storm mounts the powerful long-range AT-6 Spiral anti-tank missile on the MT-LB armoured gun tractor. This combination makes for a low profile anti-tank vehicle that is hard to detect in well-concealed ambush positions. The Storm supplements the AT-5 Spandrel antitank vehicles used by anti-tank units. However, as a superior anti-tank weapon, Storm equipped units are intended to stop enemy armoured breakthroughs.

The missile flies above the gunner's line of sight to the target. With the range of the target determined by the laser rangefinder, the missile descends onto the target just before impact. This is done primarily to clear obstacles, instead of achieving a top-attack, and can be switched off. It is possible to engage low and slow moving helicopters with the system; however, since the missile only has a contact fuze, a direct hit would be needed.

The Su-17 Fitter is a design improvement over the Su-7 Fitter replacing the Su-7's fixed wing configuration with a variable-sweep wing. This modification improved its range and performance. The Su-17 Fitter is mainly used for ground attack where it can be armed with missiles, rockets, and guns.

The Sukhoi Su-25 Frogfoot, known to its crew as the Grach ('Rook'), is the modern-day equivalent of the legendary WWII Il-2 Shturmovik. It’s tough and sturdy, able to sustain multiple hits and still bring its pilot home. Flying low and slow, it can safely attack enemy troops in close proximity to its own.

The T-55AM2 was fitted with a modern fire control system with a ballistic calculator, calculating such things as air pressure, air temperature, the weight of ammunition, reduced velocity for tube wear, and so on. It was also fitted with a laser rangefinder.

Much like the T-72M the T-55AM2 had additional ‘bazooka skirts’ added giving it improved protection versus enemy anti-tank guided missiles and other man-portable anti-tank weapons such as Carl Gustav and LAW (light anti-tank weapon).

The T-62 tank underwent a number of upgrades in its long service life. It's modernisation program started in 1972 with the mounting of a 12.7mm DShK machine-gun on the loader’s hatch for anti-helicopter fire. It was fitted with a laser rangefinder in 1975.

T-62M upgrades were introduced in 1983. These consisted of the Volna fire control system, BDD appliqué armour package, an additional belly armour plate for anti-mine protection, and 10mm thick reinforced rubber ‘bazooka’ side skirts. The additional two horseshoe shaped blocks fitted to the front of the turret were quickly nicknamed Brezhnev’s eyebrows.

The T-64 tank was a second generation tank design that first entered service in 1967 to replace the older first generation tanks. It features many innovative design features.

The T-64 has improved armour protection compared to previous Soviet tanks, introducing ceramic composite armour. The T-64 is also fitted with NBC (Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical) protection and automatic fire suppression systems. It was also the first Soviet tank to be fitted with an autoloader, which allowed for the reduction of the turret size by removing the need for a loader crewman.

The T-64 is armed with the excellent smooth bore 125mm 2A46 gun, which fires high-explosive, high-explosive fragmentation, and armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding-sabot rounds. By the 1980s, the Soviet forces in East Germany had replaced most of their tanks with the T-64 tank. The T-64 can fire Kobra (NATO designation AT-8 Songster) anti-tank guided missiles in the same manner as ordinary rounds. The missiles have a maximum range of 4000 metres and a hit probability of about 80%. The fully stabilised gun and sight system allowed the missiles to be fired on the move, unlike many other guided missiles. Not all T-64 tanks are armed with the Kobra missile, and some tanks were manufactured without the missile guidance system.

It mounted a powerful 125mm gun with an autoloader to replace the loader, producing a compact and relatively light tank with a significantly greater level of armour protection, powered by a reliable, tried and tested engine.
